Do I need to pay for an accessible parking space?

Edited

Generally, all spaces, including accessible parking spaces at buildings where Parkade is used, are paid parking.

Isn't accessible parking supposed to be free?

While local and state laws may vary, generally only metered, public street parking is free to those with a disabled persons parking placard or license plate. Parking in parking lots, garages, or other off-street locations -- including apartment buildings -- may not be, though this also depends on the building's policies.

We always recommend checking in with our team and your building manager for the policies in place at your building.

How are rates for accessible parking spaces decided?

Generally, parking prices are set by your building. Those prices are displayed in the Parkade app.

It is generally not permissible to charge higher rates specifically because a parking spot is accessible. That said, your space may be priced in line with similar spots with equivalent features. For example, if spaces with access to an electric vehicle charger are generally $50/month more expensive than a standard space, an accessible space with access to an electric vehicle charger may have that same increased rate.

Similarly, if parking spots on a specific floor or area are priced differently, that same price differential may apply to an accessible space. For example, if a lot has uncovered and covered parking areaa, spots in the covered area, including accessible spaces, may be priced higher.

Rates set by hosts

Parkade allows residents/spot owners who have long-term accessible spaces to rent their spaces out to other people. In those cases, rates are set by the primary renter of the space, not by Parkade or the building.

Does my caregiver or service provider need to pay for parking?

Generally, anyone parking at your building must use the app to reserve and pay for a parking spot. Requesting a parking fee waiver can be made as a part of a reasonable accommodation request, but Parkade cannot guarantee the outcome of such requests, as they are up to your building manager.
